bio
Based in Manhattan, John Wolfington is a Colombian-born musician, singer/songwriter, and
producer. John grew up in Washington, DC, and later moved to New York in 1996 to begin his
music career. In 2001, he released his first solo album, John Wolfington, on Smells Like
Records. The self-titled album received glowing reviews, featuring the crack rhythm section of
Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley on drums and Tim Foljahn of Cat Power and Townes Van Zandt on
bass.
Between touring alongside bands like Luna and Arab Strap, John relocated to Los Angeles,
where he collaborated with Hole’s Eric Erlandson and contributed music to Fischer Spooner’s
2005 album Odyssey. He returned to New York in 2005 and began developing his second long-
player, American Dreamsicle, which was recorded with the same instrumentalists from his first
album. The record was released in 2007 as a 2XLP set, including his self-titled album debut on
vinyl, and received even wider critical acclaim than its predecessor.
After an extended pause, John returned in 2013 with a more synth-driven sound in The Magic
Album. The following year, he released two albums: Animal, an all-acoustic album recorded
solo, and Sonic Sessions, a full band rock album on his own label, Butterfly Lane Music. Sonic
Sessions was recorded at the legendary Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo, Texas, featuring a band
of musicians from Monterrey, Mexico, and produced by Alex Castillo of the band JUMBO.
In 2019, he released Exploding Heart, an album that was originally recorded and shelved
between his self-titled album and American Dreamsicle. The album was produced at Rare Book
Room with Nicolas Vernhes. John also released singles through his side project, Coco Vanilla,
featuring Eric Erlandson (Hole, Rodney & The Tube Tops, RRIICCEE.)
John is currently working with his newly formed 90s power trio, F8KR, on an album set for
release in early 2021. In his spare time, he runs a world-class creative agency playworkgroup and
jams with his sons, Luca and Massimo.
